Fragility

One of the things I think about (in my weird, maundering way) is the fragility of the systems we depend on. Of course, I'm one of those people who worries about hurricanes, pandemic influenza and things like that. Well, not just worry, I try to prepare for them. Because of my participation in Flu Wiki I like to think I'm a little better prepared than I would be otherwise, but I noticed something this morning that I will have to take into account and that the Flu Wiki Forum has been chattering about for a long time. Relying on the Internets when our other systems go down is not necessarily a wise move.

You've got that right. The windstorm that smacked us around in December in the Puget Sound left most of my friends without phone service because they had all switched to VOIP. I have a cell phone (an ancient Nokia), but I also still hold onto my land line, and it's because of events like what happened back then.

palamedes, that's the reason I haven't moved to VOIP yet. I don't have a cell at the moment.
